1. Composition and Publication
When precisely Reger set Christoph August Tiedge’s poem An das Leben is unclear. In the volume with copies of the texts which Philomena Reger made, based on the compositional chronology of her son’s songs she was familiar with, the composition is indirectly assigned to 1891.1 The autograph fair copy, as the sole surviving source of the composition could not, however, have been made before summer 1892, as the manuscript was already consistently prepared in two colors.2
The autograph manuscript of An das Leben WoO VII/14 represents a more definitive form of the work than survives for the songs WoO VII/1– 13. The song is therefore published in the main part, and not in the Appendix of the RWA (see Evaluation of the sources). According to the title page it was originally “N 1 aus einem Cyklus – Joh. Brahms gewidmet” [“No 1 of a cycle – dedicated to Joh. Brahms”]. Nothing is known about the extent and content of this collection, ultimately probably rejected, from which Reger seems to have extracted An das Leben as a work which he still acknowledged (see Opus 4).
