1. Composition and Publication
Nothing is known about the composition of Ich stehe hoch überm See!. Only the Duets op. 14 provide a clue; the engraver’s copy, made between the beginning of December 1893 and January 1894, give the opus number as “14a”. By the completion of this manuscript at the latest, Opus 14b may have been planned, if not composed. The publisher Augener & Co., however, withdrew from a joint publication for unknown reasons. It was twelve years later, presumably without Reger’s knowledge or participation, that Augener decided to publish the work as part of the series “Bass Songs with Piano Accompaniment”. The numbering “14b” was retained, although the Songs op. 14 had been published without the additional “a”. According to dating on the proofs, Ich stehe hoch überm See! was released for print on 9 June 1906 and was published a month later.
When Augener & Co. was bought up by the publisher B. Schott’s Söhne in 1910, Reger contacted the publishing director Willy Strecker, distanced himself from his “youthful follies” (particularly from the piano pieces), but expressly made an exception for the songs, his opp. 1–3 and 10 and the Suite in E minor for organ op. 16 (letter dated 29 April 1910). In September 1910 reissues of opp. 4, 8, 12, 14b, and 15 were published.
