1. Composition and Publication
Reger began regularly publishing music inserts from 1900 onwards, particularly in the Blättern für Haus- und Kirchenmusik and the Monatschrift für Gottesdienst und kirchliche Kunst (see Chorale preludes for periodicals), and following on from this in 1901 he began to collaborate with the newly-founded periodical Die Musik-Woche. Between October 1901 and March 1903 a total of 15 contributions by Reger appeared in the periodical, published weekly in Leipzig, including chamber music, piano pieces, songs and a single organ work, the Prelude and Fugue in D minor WoO IV/10.
As with the other inserts for this periodical, there is no record of the composition time, and the engraver’s copy which was usually retained by the publisher must be regarded as lost. Correspondence with the editor Ludwig Hamann only exists for 1905.1 The scanty correspondence with Martin Krause, a great champion of Reger in his reviews in Die Musik-Woche,2 also contains no further information. The organ piece finally appeared as Reger’s twelfth contribution in the third August volume of 1902.3
