Max Reger. Sämtliche Werke, 35 as well as 3 supplement volumes, Wiesbaden 1954–86

Already in the 1950s, the publisher Breitkopf & Härtel, with the support of the newly founded Max-Reger-Institut, began a complete edition of the scattered works (as well as some unpublished movements). Without public funding, however, this joint feat could not lead to an edition that meets today’s scientific demands for a complete edition; the group of works of the arrangements is completely missing, other groups of works were partly presented in a musical text that too clearly reflects the preferences of the respective editor. At the time, there was no need for consistent edition guidelines, nor for detailed critical reports and descriptions of sources.
