1. Composition
On 23 August 1900 Reger visited his friend Adalbert Lindner, and on this occasion, leafed through his volume of copies of organ works by contemporary composers. However, according to Lindner’s anecdote, he did not form a favorable opinion: “There’s not much that’s decent in it. I’ll write you something else for it. But it will cost you a fine lemonade!” 1 By the time Lindner returned with the drink, Reger is said to have written out the seven-bar “Festive Prelude in C minor” 2. Reger himself did not give the work a title in the autograph manuscript (see Bearbeitungen Adalbert Lindners); at the end of the page just the theme was written out for a possible fugue.
2. Publication
The Prelude was published for the first time in 1922 as a facsimile in Lindner’s biography of Reger.3 With a view to the anniversary year in 1943, Reger’s 70th birthday, Lindner then suggested to the publisher Breitkopf & Härtel the publication of several works by Reger from his archive, including WoO VIII/6. On 24 February 1943 he was able to inform Fritz Stein: “In addition, the so-called Lemonade Prelude has been engraved and corrected in the original version for organ solo in C minor” (letter). Punctually on 19 March, a printed version of the short work appeared for the first time in the Allgemeine Musikzeitung published by Breitkopf & Härtel.
